There would be no problems from Linuxes with Fuse/CurlFtpFS, or with SSHFS. Wouldn't something like FTPUSE or dokan SSHFS or FTPdrive do in your case? You could host a disk image on your own server, and at the most you will be using the last XP compatible version of the "client" (insecure because without latest updates, you should really get a modern OS, using a better security model, bla, bla, bla) but since all in all it will be an "in house" operation that should be not a problem. Given your (simple) requisites and your experience/capabilities, wouldn't using some form of "netdrive" be a valid alternative in your case? But it is likely that before or later these (or their clients) also will be dumbified to exclude XP users.
